JUST IN! : President Akuffo Addo In Talks With Cabinet On Possibility of Easing Restrictions
President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo has summoned cabinet ministers to an emergency meeting to decide on whether or not to lift restrictions on social gathering in the weeks ahead.
The growing demands from a number of stakeholders has made the President's initiative necessary to ease the ban on social gatherings. A number of them have already presented roadmaps as to how they intend to observe all social distance protocols once the restrictions on public gatherings are removed.
In contrast, there's also a fierce resistance to any such decision to lift restrictions owing to the sustained increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country, although there's the case of dwindling numbers everyday.
President Akuffo Addo, collaboratively with his cabinet, take what some have described as ''the biggest decision of his presidency'' as the country waits eagerly for an announcement of the way forward amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The meeting which is to be held at the chamber of the seat of the Presidency at Jubilee House Friday afternoon follows nearly two weeks of engagement with various stakeholder groups and a series of national conversations about what it takes to live with the virus.
The President is rather said to be in a reflective mood ahead of the emergency cabinet meeting as he mulls over the implications of whichever decision is arrived at.
The President on Sunday, March 15, 2020 imposed various restrictions on the country as part of measures to curb the spread of the novel Covid-19.
The restrictions among others included a partial lockdown of the Greater Accra, Greater Kumasi and Kasoa areas, a ban on public gatherings and closure of schools and borders.
Three weeks after the announcement of the restrictions, the partial lockdown was lifted with an admonishing for the general citizenry to abide by safety protocols put in place to prevent the spread of the disease.
The decision by the President, despite being met with mixed reactions, brought life back to markets and commercial districts.
In the totality of all these, the closure of borders, a ban on religious activities, schools, bars, and funerals remain in force.
